Unblur image free: what works and what won’t

OpenPixels (openpixels.app) is a free, open source photo enhancer that runs on your own device. It can unblur images when the blur comes from too few pixels, noise, compression or a soft face, and this page says plainly when it cannot. The photo is never uploaded.

No account to try, no watermark. Saving the result takes a free sign-in.

What works

Unblur image problems it can clear.

A small picture shown large

Most “blurry” images are small ones stretched. Enlarged 2×, 4× or 8× by the model, edges and lettering come back as clean lines.

Noise and compression

Speckle and the blocky smear of a messaging app read as blur. Noise and grain on Reduce or Remove clears both.

Soft faces

Rebuild faces redraws each face it finds. See face restoration for how and when it differs from the person.

For edges that are only slightly soft, Extra sharpening under More options adds a little more; the image sharpener page covers it.

What does not

Unblur image limits: blur no tool can undo.

Camera shake

There is no model for motion blur. The result is larger and cleaner, and the streaks stay.

Badly out of focus

A photo that was never in focus stays soft, only larger. The detail was not recorded, so nothing can bring it back.

Mosaics and censor blur

A deliberate mosaic or blur over a face or a number plate cannot be undone, here or anywhere; see unpixelate image.

Steps

Unblur image files in five steps.

  1. Open the app and press Choose a photo, or drop the photo anywhere on the page.
  2. Under Size, choose 2× for a small photo, or Same size, just cleaner for one that is already large.
  3. Keep Noise and grain on Reduce, or choose Remove for heavy grain. Turn on Rebuild faces if the photo has people in it.
  4. Press Enhance, then drag the slider to compare Original with Result.
  5. Press Save the photo. The result is a PNG; saving takes a free sign-in.
Measured

It tells you whether it helped.

After you unblur images here, What changed under the result says how much sharper it is. If it says About as sharp, the blur is the kind it cannot clear. It also shrinks the result back to the original size and compares it with your photo; Faithful to the original means the detail was enlarged rather than invented.

Questions

Before you open it.

Can I unblur an image for free?

Yes. There is no watermark, no credits and no limit on how many photos you process. Trying it needs no account; saving a result takes a free sign-in. The photo is processed on your own device and never uploaded.

Can it fix motion blur or camera shake?

No. There is no model for motion blur. The result is larger and cleaner, but the streaks stay.

Can it unblur a face?

Yes, when the face is soft rather than shaken. Rebuild faces finds each face and redraws it at 512 × 512. The rebuilt face can differ a little from the person, most of all when it is tiny.

Can it remove a blur or mosaic someone added on purpose?

No. What was covered was never kept in the file, so no tool can bring it back.

Can I unblur image files on my phone?

Yes. Open openpixels.app in the phone’s browser; nothing is installed and the photo stays on the phone.

Which unblur image setting should I start with?

2× with Noise and grain on Reduce, the defaults. If What changed then says About as sharp, the blur is focus or shake, which enlarging cannot fix.
