Image upscaler software that runs offline on your computer
OpenPixels (openpixels.app) is a free photo enhancer, and it also comes as image upscaler software for Windows, macOS and Android. The apps enlarge a photo 2×, 4× or 8× and clear noise and compression artefacts on your own device, with the same models as the web app. Nothing is uploaded.
What the apps do not do yet: colourising, rebuilding faces and removing the background run in the web app and the browser extension, not in this image upscaler software. Open the web app for those.
Open source, under MIT or Apache-2.0. All releases, with checksums and source code, are on GitLab.
Image upscaler software with no connection needed.
Each model downloads once, the first time a photo needs it, and is kept on your device. After that the image upscaler software works with no network connection at all: on a plane, behind a firewall, or anywhere you would rather your photos did not travel.
There is no server in the loop. The work is done by your own processor, so the image upscaler software has nothing to charge you for and nothing to upload.
Enlarge and clean up, on your own machine.
2×, 4× or 8×
Choose how much larger to make the photo, or Same size, just cleaner to keep its size and only clean it up.
Noise and compression
Clears grain and the blocky edges left by heavy JPEG compression, at the strength you choose.
Photos or drawings
What is it picks the model: Photograph, Photograph best quality, or Drawing or anime for flat colour and line art.
Several at once
In the Windows and Mac apps, Several at once runs a list of photos with the same settings, then Download all as a ZIP saves every result in one file.
Which file to download.
Windows
An .exe installer for 64-bit Windows 10 and 11. If Windows shows “Windows protected your PC”, choose More info, then Run anyway.
Android
An APK file for Android 8 or later. When Android asks, allow your browser to install it.
How large it will go.
The Windows and Mac apps hold the result near 40 megapixels, and the Android app holds it to 16. When a photo is already large, the image upscaler software says how far it can go, beside the size control, before anything runs: past that it would have to shrink the photo first, and the result would come out softer than what you started with.
It cannot invent detail that was never captured. Detail finer than your original pixels is the model’s best estimate.
The same tool, in a browser tab.
If you would rather install nothing, the same models run in the browser at openpixels.app, and work offline there too after the first visit. To reach a set resolution, see how to upscale an image to 4K.
Before you open it.
Is this image upscaler software free?
Yes. The Windows, Mac and Android apps are free to download. OpenPixels is open source under MIT or Apache-2.0 at your option, and every release is on GitLab with its checksums and source code.
Does the image upscaler software work offline?
Yes. Each AI model downloads once, the first time a photo needs it. After that the app enlarges photos and clears noise with no network connection, and your photos stay on your computer or phone.
What can the apps not do yet?
Colourising a black-and-white photo, rebuilding faces and removing or replacing the background run in the web app and the browser extension, not in the Windows, Mac and Android apps yet. The apps enlarge photos and clear noise and compression artefacts.
Which versions of Windows, macOS and Android does it run on?
Windows: an .exe installer for 64-bit Windows 10 and 11. macOS: one file for Intel and Apple silicon Macs, on macOS 11 or later. Android: an APK for Android 8 or later.
Why does Windows say “Windows protected your PC”?
The installer is not signed, so Windows SmartScreen shows a warning the first time. Choose More info, then Run anyway.
How large can the result be?
The Windows and Mac apps hold the result near 40 megapixels; the Android app holds it to 16 megapixels, because on a phone the size of the work is the size of the wait. When a photo is already large, the app says how far it can go before anything runs.
Do I have to install anything to try it?
No. The same image upscaler runs in your browser at openpixels.app, with nothing installed and nothing uploaded.
